General Hospital: Rick Springfield Returns to Port Charles

By: BuddyTV

Around the same time a then still unknown Rick Springfield was hoping to get what would become his breakthrough album, he signed on with the daytime drama, General Hospital . With nary a background to speak of just yet, Springfield quickly became one of the favorites on the soap, due in large part to his heartthrob good looks and charisma.

As Dr. Noah Drake, Springfield soon established an impressive following as General Hospital ’s version of eye candy in the early `80s. He was perfect as the charming hospital lothario until his departure from the show in 1983, when the multi-platinum success of his first two albums causes scheduling conflicts between concert tour dates and filming for the show.

In 2005, more than two decades after he left Port Charles for a surgical post in an Atlanta hospital, the original Dr. Drake was back with a monkey on his back. Asked to offer his consult on the case of a then injured Jason Morgan (played by the equally delicious Steve Burton), Springfield ’s Noah Drake came face-to-face with his alcohol problem.

Springfield’s return engagement on General Hospital has given him the chance to act alongside Jason Thompson (incidentally an excellent spitting image of Springfield ), who plays his estranged, grown son, Patrick. When Noah realized that his problem with the bottle left him in no position to perform surgery on Jason, he recommended Patrick, who also happens to be a neurosurgeon. It has since been a journey for father and son to rebuild the bridge that’s been burned between them.

The 58-year year old superstar recording artist will grace the Port Charles canvas anew this summer. The pop/rock icon and former teen heartthrob responsible for such phenomenal hits like “Jessie’s Girl” and “Love Somebody” is due to appear in a story arc that reportedly also involves the reemergence of Eli Love, his own campy rock star doppelganger on the series.
